Schwinn IC2 Vs IC3 – Which Is Superior?

With Schwinn indoor cycling bikes, it’s hard to go wrong. They are probably the top-selling indoor bikes brand in the world. That’s why when it comes to picking up one of these two bikes, you may wonder which is superior? Which should you buy?

I can tell you that I think both products are made with good materials and care. However, there are some key differences between the Schwinn IC3 and the Schwinn IC2.

Flywheel Set:

First off, the Schwinn IC3 has a 40-pound flywheel weight. This heavyweight and high inertia mean that your bike will work on an ideal resistance setting for all levels of users. I like the fact that it also smoothes out jumps in resistance which some lighter flywheels can’t handle.

On the other hand the Schwinn IC2, flywheel weights 31-pound, a lighter flywheel than the IC3. It is still heavy enough for beginners, but if you are an advanced user, it’s possible that the resistance may not offer you a more stable riding experience than the Schwinn IC3 does.

Also in terms of inertia and flywheels – The Schwinn IC3 offers a more real-world training experience than the Schwinn IC2 does. The heavier flywheel on the IC3 is better for spinning classes. While the IC2 has settings that work well for all experience levels for a smoother ride.

Cooling Fan:

The Schwinn IC2 has a cooling fan in an integrated console. It’s not usually a feature that it shares with the IC3, but in my opinion, you get what you pay for in this case.

When you’re working out on a stationary bike, you don’t want to stop for fear of overheating. However, when you stop pedaling, you can feel yourself heating up. Especially if the room is warm.

That’s why this cooling fan feature on the Schwinn IC2 is ideal for me. Because it helps keep me cool when I’m on my workout routine or spinning class. It also keeps me from overheating – making it easier to get through all my training goals for the day.

The Schwinn IC3 does not come with an integrated console or cooling fan feature. This means that you may need to step off your bike on occasion to keep cool. Which some people think is ideal, but I find it more of a hassle than anything else. This feature makes Schwinn IC2 a good exercise bike.

User Weight Capacity:

Schwinn IC2 – 250 lbs

The Schwinn IC3 has a larger weight capacity of 300 pounds. This again is probably why some consider this machine to be superior. After all, more weight capacity means you can exercise on the bike without having it collapse. You can also feel safe using your exercise machine which is important because many people consider the exercise bike to be irreplaceable.

My take on this is that if you are using an exercise bike like the Schwinn IC2, then you most likely already know how to use one properly. Meaning that you know not to overload it with your weight.

Also, I think that most people who need more than 300 pounds of weight capacity will be using a different type of exercise machine that is more solid and less portable. So, I don’t think having the higher weight capacity on the Schwinn IC2 is necessary for most people.

Heart Rate Monitoring:

Cycling is a fantastic form of cardiovascular exercise. Heat rate (and power meters) are the most precise means to assess training intensity. If this is critical information for you, make sure your heart rate monitors are on during your workout session.

The Schwinn IC2 cannot connect to any heart rate monitor as this doesn’t support any. While the Schwinn IC3 comes with a heart rate monitor that links to an integrated console. So, you can always check your pulse during your workout session.

The IC3 comes with a wireless chest strap that connects to the console. The console displays your current speed, RPMs, estimated power, time, and distance traveled.

The pulse grips on the IC3 are located underneath the handlebars, and they measure your heart rate through your hands rather than your chest like many exercise bikes do these days

When it comes to cycling, heart rate monitoring is a key indicator of how intense or light you’re exercising. With this in mind, if you’re an aerobic exercise aficionado, you’ll want to use the heart rate monitor that’s on your IC3.

Schwinn IC2 Vs IC3 – An Overview

Schwinn IC2 Review:

The Schwinn IC2 is a felt pad indoor cycling bike that is built to last with a sturdy steel frame. The handlebars and seat are adjustable to fit your body type and provide comfort for workouts of any duration. This lightweight exercise bike has a room-saving design making it great for smaller spaces such as apartments, condos, and garages without compromising the quality of your workout.

Its durability will long last after the warranty period has expired which makes this an investment for you to use for the long term. It is also easy to assemble so you won’t have any issues getting it up and running in no time.

It comes with a basic console that keeps track of simple metrics like time, RPMs, distance, and calories burned. The bad news is that you can’t connect this console to any of the many cycling applications available.

This bike takes up a little amount of room when compared to other adult tricycles. If you have a tiny space in your living room or bedroom, it will most likely fit. You may place it in a space without having to move furniture to accommodate it since dimensions are 45 by 23 by 49 inches.

Another great feature of this spin bike is it has a light pair of wheels at the front of the base of about 83 pounds. This makes it easy to move if you need to free up space after a workout.

Don’t worry if you’re mounting your bike on a surface that isn’t level; this indoor cycling bike has adjustable leveling feet. Even on uneven ground, you may adjust them to ensure that you and the bike are well-balanced, even if there is some variance.

A key distinction between this bike and others is the driver. Unlike other bikes, which include a belt as part of their drive mechanism, this one has a chain, similar to that used in outdoor cycling. It works just like a belt though it requires maintenance which is regular lubrication to prevent friction. Just like you would do with an outdoor bike.

Pros

  • Infinite resistance levels
  • Corrosion resistant frame
  • Adjustable seats
  • Adjustable handlebars

Cons

The drive system is a belt-drive design made for low maintenance and quiet operation. When you want a smooth, low-maintenance workout, the Schwinn IC3 is the indoor cycle trainer for you. The bike has a 40-pound flywheel, which is heavier than many of its competitors, making for a smooth and quiet ride.

The maximum weight capacity of this inside cycle trainer is 300 pounds. Keep in mind that it has user presets to cater to different users with varying fitness levels. This means the Schwinn IC3 will be able to handle all types of workouts – easy, moderate, or intense.

The handlebars and seat are adjustable, so you can get the perfect fit for your workouts. All in all, the Schwinn IC3 is a fantastic option for anyone looking to add an indoor cycle trainer to their workout regimen. You’ll be able to get a great cardio workout that will strengthen and tone your legs and back.

The seat can be adjusted both vertically (up and down) and horizontally (back and forth) using a knob pin to match the needs of individuals of various heights, sizes, and sitting positions.

You may also enhance the experience by making it appear as if you’re riding up a hill. This is accomplished with a resistance knob that is turned in either direction to make the ride easier or more difficult.

Pros

  • Chest strap available
  • Heavier flywheel
  • High weight capacity

Cons

  • No cooling fan
  • The seat is not that uncomfortable

Schwinn IC2 Vs IC3 – Conclusion

Schwinn bikes have a long history of excellence in the field of cycling and fitness. You can be certain that any Schwinn model is high-quality, as it has over a century of expertise in the industry. The IC2 and IC3 versions are compact enough to fit in a confined location and include two wheels for simple transportation from one place to another.

Both provide infinite resistance and a console that displays all important information to assist you in monitoring your progress.

Schwinn IC2 Vs IC3 – Final Verdict

If you are looking for a bike that is both compact and affordable, then the Schwinn IC2 Indoor Cycle Trainer is your best bet. If you want to be able to track more extensive information about your workout in addition to being able to use a chest strap monitor, then the Schwinn IC3 Indoor Cycle Trainer with its additional functional features is the way to go.

The bigger flywheel on the IC3 makes for a smoother ride and greater weight capacity, even though it does come at a cost in terms of shifting feel. The flywheel in the IC3 is 9 pounds heavier than the one in the IC2, which contributes to greater momentum when cycling. It does, however, take more energy to stop a spinning wheel at high speed.

The IC3, in addition to allowing you to use a chest strap while the IC2 doesn’t, also provides this option. However, the IC2 has a cooling fan which the IC3 doesn’t.
